                       MUN

 DAV UN CLUB

More often then not our surroundings seem to be much beyond our control. Sometimes because the butterfly effect has no immediate result and sometimes because we don't really believe that we alone can make a difference. It is this feeling that the MUN targets and once you are a part of it, you know that a hurricane swirled just because one butterfly fluttered a wing. The MUN is the simulation of the actual UN where students from all over the world represent as delegates with the onus of representing a nation they themselves belong to.

This is a long and tedious process, which has various stages. The first stage which begins six months prior to the event which involves acquainting one's self with the customs, ways and the powerful body language which the nation in general and its diplomats in particular adopt. The second stage is the creation of the country profile: an official document which represents a holistic view of the nation’s achievements and international standing which covers various categories like history, people, economy, culture government, constitution, foreign policy and diplomatic relationship. The country profile is usually accompanied by a model and is judged on the basis of creativity, interesting and authentic representation of valid data. The next stage is usually a simultaneous process accompanying the second one is concrete research work on agenda items given to each delegate which differ from committee to committee. As each organ of the UN has different powers and roles, you could be found defending the Iraq war or criticizing the NPT. Then the final stage involves execution of all these steps and is the true test of your diplomacy, negotiation abilities, consensus building skills and debating potential.

This year marked the 5th anniversary of an eventful journey and looking back at the path embarked upon is not to difficult for along the path sparkle achievements that set it aglow. Since the beginning of the journey quite a few milestones have added to the glitter. One of the most laudable steps was creation of the UN CLUB (for class 8 to 12). Every year two MUNs are organized; namely Indian Model United Nations (INMUN) by St. Xavier’s and The Ryan Group of International Schools, and Delhi Public School Model United Nations (DPSMUN) by UNA-USA in collaboration with DPS R.K. Puram, New Delhi. This year the school participated in both of these conferences. INMUN 2006 was organized on 6, 7 and 8 October at Hotel Hill View, Faridabad. Students, namely Dheeraj Kumar, Abhinoor Dhull, Yogesh Sharma, Rohit Gupta, Prateek, and Khushal Sagar, represented the UAE under the guidance of teacher advisors Mrs. Jyoti Sharma and Ms. Sajal Duggal. Our team bagged award for the Best Delegate (Yogesh Sharma). We also had a member in the World Press (Swati Narnaulia) who got a certificate of achievement for having reported for The Security Council and The Economic and Social Council. The glorious adventure continued at DPSMUN 2006 organized on 2, 3 and 4 December at the India Habitat Center, New Delhi. Our school sent a delegation representing USA led by our teacher advisors Mrs. Kusum Singh and Mrs. Jyoti Sharma. We had the opportunity to interact with students from all over the world as 100 schools participated and 700 delegates attended the conference. Our school bagged 7 awards in all committees and categories: The Best Delegation Award from the MUN Secretary General, Best Country Profile, Best Delegate (Swati Narnaulia, Siddharth Mahajan and Aayush Srivastava) and Best Position Paper (Chhaya Gupta and Chanakya Mukherjee)

The MUN is a life changing experience which opens eyes to challenges of the world community, provides world class education, helps you familiarize with the culture and people from all over the world, and improves your social & diplomatic consensus by building managerial skills & filling your life with a lifetime of confidence. The MUN has made us realize that nothing in the world; nothing at all goes unnoticed or is inconsequential.

The MUN rocked us. Hope it does the same to you................
